At 1850m, in the heart of “Hautes Alpes” and at the gates of Queyras (with the famous village of Saint-Véran), Vars has become one of the most attractive ski resorts in Southern Alps. Set in an environment of high mountains (Massif des Ecrins, Ubaye and Queyras) the resort has ski runs approaching 3000m.
Vars is composed of 4 hamlets spread along the famous “Grandes Alpes” Road. It combines the attractiveness of its traditional villages and all the modern services of a great ski resort.
Mediterranean climate to ensure sunny days and high ski area (1650 m -2750m) to ensure good snow.
In Summer, set on the “Grandes Alpes” Road, Vars is a good staying point to hike (particularly in the Val d’Escreins and the beautiful walks in Queyras).
Thanks to its old barns and chalets, Vars Sainte-Catherine keeps its traditional mountain looks. Most houses (very often old farms) are respectful of old building uses : stone foundation, upper level made of wood (larch), balcony to dry the laundry.
These mountain village aspects, together with the good ski areas make this village a favourite.
If you don’t want to drive, a free shuttle car is available at regular times of the day, in front of the chalet on the small village square. This shuttle will drop you in front of the ski lifts and will take you back home.
Access to slopes :
For those that do not wish to take their car, a free shuttle bus in front of the chalet runs every half hour, and will drop you off in front of the ascent of your choice and will take you back to the chalet after skiing.
